A Weekend with Amarillis

June 19-21, 2009

Amarillis: Three talented women who play dance music in a variety of styles: for New England contras, English country dances, and waltzes and other couple dances.

Allison Thompson is a musician, folk-dancer and historian of the dance. She started English country-dancing in the mid-seventies and has been dancing, teaching and playing for dances ever since. She was foreman/squire for the Iron Rose Garland Dance Team and the Iron City Morris. Allison plays concertina, recorders and accordions with the multi-faceted trio, Amarillis, which plays for contra, English and Vintage dances.

Karen Millyard has been leading English Country Dances for years. She is a choreographer, researcher, consultant and professional dance teacher who works in theatre, television, schools and the community.

Friday
8-10:30   Mostly Waltz dance with Amarillis (polka class 7.15-8)
Saturday
1-2.30   Musicians' workshop, "Playing for Waltzers" - for experienced musicians
Come and discover the thrill of playing for a roomful of whirling dancers!

Learn how to play waltzes with the lilt and lift that puts wings to the dancers' heels. (No, it's NOT just oom-pah-pah!) Amarillis, a folk-baroque trio, will guide advanced musicians in how to play and improvise on waltzes, from sweet Irish airs to sultry Venezuelan tango-waltzes. Tips for melody and harmony players as well as backup (piano, guitar, etc.) players.

3-5.30   English for all dance workshop, taught by Allison Thompson
7.30-10.30   English dance with caller Karen Millyard
Sunday
1.30-2.30   Zwiefacher/hambo dance
2.45-4.45   Advanced ECD workshop with teachers Allison Thompson and Karen Millyard
Among other things, Allison will be teaching Colin Hume's reconstruction of Step Stately, a challenging but rewarding dance containing both duple and triple minor sections.
